Reaction of thallium(III) salts with homoallylic alcohols: ring contraction vs. dimethoxylation.

چکیده
The oxidation of 2-(3,4-dihydronaphthalen-1-yl)-ethanol (1) with a variety of thallium(III) salts was investigated. An indan, formed by a ring contraction reaction, was obtained in good to moderate yields under a variety of reaction conditions: i) thallium triacetate (TTA) in aqueous AcOH; ii) thallium tris-trifluoroacetate (TTFA) in aqueous TFA; iii) TTFA in CH(2)Cl(2); iv) thallium tripropionate (TTP) in aqueous propionic acid and v) thallium tris-[(S)-(-)-triacetoxypropionate] in aqueous (S)-(-)-2-acetoxypropionic acid. On the other hand, the reaction of compound 1 with TTA in methanol led to a 2:1 mixture of the corresponding cis- and trans-dimethoxylated compounds, respectively. These compounds were formed by a thallium-promoted addition of methanol to the double bond.

Oxidation of Tertiary Homoallylic Alcohols by Thallium Trinitrate: Fragmentation vs. Ring Contraction

The indan system occurs in several natural products of biological relevance. The most common approaches for synthesizing such molecules are either the direct modification of substrates that already bear the indan skeleton or the cycloaddition reactions. In a previous paper, we have reported the preparation of the hydrindan system by thallium trinitrate (TTN) mediated ring contraction of 2-decal...

The preparation of polymer-supported allyltin reagents was shown to be possible for both unfunctionalized and functionalized allyl units. These reagents were treated with aldehydes in the presence of cerium(III) or indium(III) salts to afford high yields of homoallylic alcohols, practically uncontaminated with organotin residues (less than 5 ppm). Some mechanism aspects are briefly discussed an...
متن کاملIron-catalyzed carbometalation of propargylic and homopropargylic alcohols.
Nucleophilic addition to alkynes represents an attractive approach to the synthesis of olefins. Obstacles to this strategy include the low reactivity of alkynes toward many organometallic reagents and difficulties associated with controlling the regioselectivity of addition. Here we demonstrate that Fe(III) salts are effective precatalysts for the carbometalation of alkynes. Primary and seconda...
متن کاملHot water-promoted cyclopropylcarbinyl rearrangement facilitates construction of homoallylic alcohols.
In refluxing 9 : 1 (v/v) H2O-1,4-dioxane and without an additional catalyst, the rearrangements of various types of cyclopropyl carbinols were attempted. It was found that the reactions generally gave homoallylic alcohols in good to very high chemical yields. Rearrangements of bicyclic or tricyclic cyclopropyl carbinols readily gave the desired ring-expanded cyclic homoallylic alcohols which ar...
